In honor of the upcoming 2020 Olympic Summer Games in Tokyo, our urban infill project celebrates the ingenuity of this 2.5-metre-wide home, slotted between two existing buildings in Toshima Ward, the densest municipality in central Tokyo. Designed by Madoka Aihara & Toshiyuki Yamazaki, the project is an aggregation of small spaces, stacked vertically over 4 stories. A pictogram is a stylised and schematic graphic representation which expresses a message, an activity, an action or a service. Pictograms do not belong to a particular language or form of writing, and therefore function as a universal language, much like architectural diagrams. German graphic designer and typographer, Otl Aicher developed these pictograms for the 1972 Olympic games in Munich. The silhouettes are produced with a limited number of body parts: the head, trunk and limbs. These are formed by a line of constant thickness. The standardisation of graphical elements subject to a system of norms contributes to the unity of the set. The way some sports are represented influenced the sets of pictograms for later olympic games editions. Innovation - Demountable Office Building

This 8,600sf four-story cuboid was built in just six months on the old grounds of the Technical University in Delft, Netherlands. Apart from the ground floor slab, all the building components are modular and dry-mounted, so when the building is no longer used, they can be removed without damage and used again in other projects. The supporting structure of the new building comprises a slender steel skeleton and ceilings of veneer timber. The columns and beams have not been welded, but joined with screws. detail-online.com

The minimalist, ceiling-high insulated glazing is fastened directly to the beam with glazing beads. Opening casements with metal lamellae that are arranged between the glazed areas provide natural ventilation. The ceilings lie on profiles of 12-mm-thick curved, flat-rolled steel which are fastened to the columns of the supporting structure. These are covered with limestone honeycomb panels which in turn are clad with gypsum fibreboard. Flooring of recycled PVC completes the construction, in which the floor can be dismounted without damage. The air-conditioning conduits, which can be used to heat the building as well, have been left exposed between the visible rips of the ceiling elements, making them more easily accessible for maintenance, repair or disassembly. The project is an elegant manifestation of the cradle-to-cradle principle, where the building becomes a store of materials. The building componentry and some systems will remain in a closed cycle and intended to be reused in other projects when the existing building is no longer required.

This collaboration seeks to design, furnish and deliver sustainable cabins specifically for the hotel and leisure industry. Hytte delivers both off the shelf designs and bespoke co-branded cabins for hoteliers and leisure operators alike. The modular cabin unit permits multiple unit configurations which in-turn is based around the idea of a traditional village community. This product is a direct reaction to the current hospitality marketplace. On one hand, there is a natural and personal reaction to mass market holidays, overbearing commercialism and a growing sense of environmentalism. Then throw in to the mix Covid-19 and you have the perfect storm for this type of cross disciplinary innovation. hytteliving.com
