Infill - Windmill House

Portuguese practice Box Arquitectos has completed a narrow, white home in the dense urban centre of Ponta Delgado, with two volumes that face each other across a long garden. The entire ground floor is given over to a large social space and kitchen that opens onto a central garden. At the opposite end of the garden is an independent single-storey block housing an additional en-suite bedroom. In the main home, a black floating-tread staircase leads up to the first floor, where small landing connects a bathroom and two bedrooms, one of which opens onto a terrace overlooking the garden.

Designer Spotlight - Barber Osgerby

Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby founded their East London studio in 1996, after studying architecture together at the Royal College of Art. Watch - Built on Narrow Land

Built on Narrow Land is a film that looks at a moment in Cape Cod when the spirit of European modern architecture inspired a group of bohemian designers – professionals and amateurs both – to build houses that married principles of the Bauhaus to the centuries-old local architecture of seaside New England.

Then in 1959, with the establishment of the Cape Cod National Seashore the fate of these houses suddenly hung in the balance: houses built after 1959 became the property of the park on the death of their owners.

Through the points of view of a few key characters, most notably Ruth Hatch (homeowner with a lifetime lease) and Bill Burke (Park Ranger in charge of cultural affairs), the film reveals the privilege of building on virgin landscape, the impact of eminent domain, its effect on people whose houses will have to be given to the federal government and, literally, given back to the land.
