Project - RailCar

An abandoned building located in the center of West Midtown will become Atlanta’s first ruin bar. Popular throughout eastern Europe, relics of a war torn or industrial past, forgotten buildings and spaces are transformed into urban destinations to provide unpretentious spaces in which to drink, eat or dance the night away.

Infill Urbanism

Some of the most interesting infill projects creatively make use of unexpected urban residual spaces. Dutch practice Kuhne & Co's studio on Boomgaardstraat in Rotterdam was built on a narrow strip of land and floats on stilts over a parking lot. The 54-metre-long volume is only five metres deep and contains office space, a workshop and the architects' dwelling. Another one of Kuhne & Co's designs, an apartment and office space, hovers above the entrance to a delivery yard, with the ground level plot just big enough to host a concrete volume containing the entrance and a staircase

Designer - Cecilie Manz

Considered one of the leading Danish furniture designers of her generation, Cecilie Manz Studio designs furniture, tableware, lighting and electronics. In addition to the work with industrial manufactured products, experimental prototypes and more sculptural one-offs make up an important part of her work and approach.

In November 2017, Manz was awarded designer of the year in the Design Awards by Bo bedre, Costume Living, Nordic Living and Boligmagasiet. In September 2014, she won the Danish Crown Prince Couple's Culture Award for her contribution to design

Innovation - RIBA’s International Prize 2021

Bangladesh rural hospital, designed by Kashef Chowdhury/URBANA, has been awarded the RIBA International Prize 2021.

Crowned as the world's best new building, the Friendship Hospital has been announced as the last winner of prestigious biennial awards that celebrate projects from around the world "that demonstrate design excellence and social impact."

The 4,770-square-metre building is a remote community hospital, set in the water-laden landscape of the Bengal in south-west Bangladesh.

The building was designed as a sustainable and low-cost hospital to deliver essential healthcare services to the local communities of Satkhira in the southern region of Bangladesh. It provides a medical lifeline for thousands of people in an area of the coast that was heavily affected by a major cyclone in 2007.

Lauded for the care and humanity at the heart of its design, the building responds innovatively to the challenging environmental conditions of the Bengal, a fragile and dynamic environment, directly impacted, without protection, to rising sea levels.

The prize marks an important moment for architecture in Bangladesh, following the recent award of the Soane medal to Marina Tabassum, Chowdhury’s former partner, who has been developing low-cost homes for landless communities in the country’s flood-prone coastal regions. Both architects’ work offers important lessons for the global north in how to do more with less.
