RIBA House of the Year 2023

Tucked away down an alley in the Clyde Circus Conservation Area of Tottenham, Green House, by Hayhurst and Co. Architects screams sustainability — from the cross-laminated timber frame and use of reclaimed materials, to the recycled rain water used to feed the bamboo which enhances air quality throughout. Neither form or function were compromised whilst prioritising the environmental impact of the design, with both a riad-esque central atrium and modular family area being just a couple of the defining features of this property. Green House is the epitome of what can be achieved when the client and architect collaborate with a mutual goal in mind.

House in Nishioizumi

Nestled in a quiet corner of Tokyo, the House in Nishioizumi, designed by the Toyama-based architect Tomoko Fukayama, stands as a testament to minimalist Japanese architecture. The house, with its unassuming exterior, invites one into a realm of tranquil simplicity.

An Atlas of Es Devlin

Straddling the worlds of high-brow opera and pop-culture fashion, British polymath Es Devlin has spent the last three decades forging a path all her own. Whether developing an immersive spatial and aural installation for Prada or a tech-forward backdrop for Beyonce’s Renaissance World Tour, with the staging of James Graham's Dear England play at The National Theatre in between, the highly sought-after designer transcends definition. A new exhibition at New York’s Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum highlights the designer’s meteoric rise. On view until 11 August 2024, ‘An Atlas of Es Devlin’ highlights a vast array of process materials: maquettes, sketches, material samples, photographs, notations, and even standalone artworks: school year paintings along with more recent ones.

Watch - Squaring the Circle (The Story of Hipgnosis)

Photographer, filmmaker, and art director, Anton Corbijn’s debut documentary feature is an homage to the creative geniuses Hipgnosis, the design studio headed by Storm Thorgerson and Aubrey “Po” Powell, who were responsible for elevating album covers from staid band portraits to high concept art pieces. Working with Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, 10cc, Paul McCartney, Peter Gabriel among others, Hipgnosis revolutionised what an album cover could be, setting a new standard and influencing artists for generations to come. Packed with rock stars, this documentary tells the vibrant story of the design duo behind some of the 20th century's most iconic album covers.
