Of the 4 billion people who live in cities worldwide, almost 1 billion reside in informal settlements. Although often massive, they are largely impervious to traditional mapping technologies, making them invisible and devoid of urban rights. Favelas 4D uses 3D laser scanning technology to analyze the morphology of Rocinha, the largest favela in Rio de Janeiro, making the informal visible. mit.edu
