Overview

Situated in the heart of Tribeca, New York City, this expansive 2,200 sq. ft. loft is located in a six-story boutique condominium building that was built in the 1920s. The client maintains a vast collection of art and artifacts and sought to showcase their collection within a luxurious updated residence.

The original residence embodied the quintessential 90’s loft aesthetic, with 12-foot-high ceilings, exposed brick walls, narrow plank oak floors, was encumbered with an outdated kitchen, bathrooms and appurtenances.

The client’s objective was to maintain the essence of the loft while elevating the design utilizing contemporary finishes and furnishings. This mandate was achieved by simplifying the layout, refining the material palette and allowing the apartment to serve as a canvas for artistic display and introspection.

To begin the modifications, all floors were stripped to the structural members, leveled and new oak floors are installed throughout the loft. The original brick walls bring added texture to the main living areas while within the sleeping quarters, the brick walls are painted to create a softer material ambiance.

Natural stone tiles adorn the bathrooms, providing a striking contrast to the natural wood vanities. The kitchen and living areas are visually connected through color and material, both the kitchen backsplash and media center wall are embellished with large slabs of black veined marble which adds a touch of luxury within the living areas.

To complete the space, carefully chosen combinations of recessed and track lighting are implemented to highlight and showcase the impressive art collection and interior details. The result is a loft that retains its original essence while gracefully coupling with a contemporary design vision.
