Delray Farm, Delray Beach, Florida

South Florida Sustainable Vertical Farming

Overview

Delray Farm is an agritourism development dedicated to the promotion of sustainable farming techniques, education and events.

A private events building and grow house facility work in tandem to highlight the future of sustainable farming and food consumption. Both buildings serve very different functions but are equally important to frame the growing interest in sustainable farming concepts. To highlight this discourse, a purposeful, yet simple architectural design was sought.

The buildings are customized metal prefabricated buildings where the rational structural grid dictate the facade opening locations and sizes. These intentional apertures filter movement and view, at the threshold between invention and the natural landscape.

Large, gabled roof planes hover delicately, connected to earth by a root system of slender columns that are punctuated by a sequence of voids between.

The apparent transparency of the structure permits the surrounding landscape to breach the building’s temporal enclosures.

The façade of the events building is composed of large canvas deployable screens that can be stretched across the openings to enclose the interior. Large volumes of transparent ETFE  define the grow house and create an exhibition of the plants and shifting diurnal environmental conditions within.

The events building is essentially a shelter that is primarily open to air and designed to connect one’s spirit to the site. The grow house facility is at once an incubator for these ideas to flourish, positioned behind the events building, and a seminal part of the overall composition of the development.

Together, both buildings serve to enhance the intellectual and philosophical connection of each guest to their immediate surroundings.
